FCL vs LCL
Choosing How Your Cargo Travels
The fundamental shipping decision for any importer or exporter moving less than a full container's worth of goods, or exactly a full one.
The Comparison
Full Container vs Shared Container
The names describe exactly what they are. The tradeoffs are about cost, speed, and how your cargo is handled.
FCL, Full Container Load
You book and pay for an entire container, whether or not your cargo fills it completely. No other shipper's goods share the space.
LCL, Less Than Container Load
Your cargo shares a container with other shippers' goods, consolidated by a freight forwarder or NVOCC. You only pay for the space your cargo actually uses.
FCL Is Usually Faster
With no consolidation or deconsolidation step at either end, FCL shipments typically move faster port to port than LCL cargo.
LCL Is Usually Cheaper For Small Volumes
If your shipment doesn't come close to filling a container, LCL avoids paying for empty space you don't need.
Good To Know
Choosing Between The Two
What actually decides which option makes sense.
Volume Is The Main Factor
As a general rule, once your cargo approaches roughly half a container's volume, FCL often becomes cost-competitive or cheaper than LCL, even with unused space.
LCL Carries More Handling Risk
Because LCL cargo is consolidated and deconsolidated alongside other shippers' goods, there's more handling, and more opportunity for damage or delay, than a sealed FCL container that isn't opened until it reaches you.
LCL Has Extra Transit Steps
LCL shipments typically pass through a consolidation warehouse at origin and a deconsolidation warehouse at destination, adding days to the transit time compared to a direct FCL move.
