Ocean Network Express Pte. Ltd. — company background, network and latest news.
Ocean Network Express is the only one of the major container lines that was designed rather than accumulated. In 2016 Japan's three container carriers — Nippon Yusen Kaisha, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha — agreed to fold their container divisions into a single joint venture, on the reasoning that three sub-scale Japanese lines competing against consolidated European and Chinese carriers was not a durable position for any of them. The venture was established that year, began commercial activity in late 2017 and started carrying cargo on 1 April 2018, which is why three different founding dates circulate. The structure that resulted is genuinely unusual: the operating company is headquartered in Singapore while a holding company sits in Tokyo, and the three parents remain shareholders rather than having sold out. None of the three parent companies exited shipping; they retained their bulk, tanker, car carrier and energy businesses and contributed only the container arms. That is why containers stencilled with NYK and K Line owner codes still move in ONE service today: those boxes were never transferred to the joint venture.
ONE operated 284 vessels with capacity above 2.26 million TEU as of 30 June 2026, ranking sixth globally. It sits in the Premier Alliance with HMM and Yang Ming, a grouping formed after Hapag-Lloyd left THE Alliance for Gemini and effective for five years from February 2025. Premier is the smallest of the three East-West blocs by capacity, and its 2026 network redesign reflects that position: rather than copying Gemini's full hub-and-spoke model, ONE and its partners introduced more direct port calls, cut the number of Chinese transhipment hubs in favour of concentrating on Shanghai and Busan, and added new Asia-Europe and Transpacific strings, with the stated aim of improving reliability and shortening transits. Like the other alliances, Premier's 2026 network keeps Asia-Europe sailings routed around the Cape of Good Hope rather than through the Red Sea. ONE's own trade coverage spans the Transpacific and Asia-Europe corridors, a substantial intra-Asia network inherited from three Japanese parents with long regional histories, plus Asia-Middle East, Latin America and Africa services.
Commercially, ONE has stayed close to container shipping rather than expanding into forwarding or contract logistics. Its capital has gone into tonnage. The company reported an orderbook of 53 vessels partway through its 2026 fiscal year, with deliveries running through a programme it calls ONE2030, and its newer classes span a wide size range: the ONE Innovation class at around 24,000 TEU, the Freedom class near 15,200 TEU, and Sparkle-class ships of roughly 13,700 TEU delivering across 2025 and 2026. It has also committed to methanol dual-fuel propulsion, announcing an inaugural set of twelve methanol dual-fuel containerships as part of its green strategy. Financially the company has proved considerably more resilient than the 2018 launch year suggested it might be: for the first quarter of fiscal 2026, covering April to June, ONE reported net profit of $31 million and simultaneously raised its full-year guidance to $900 million, three times its earlier $300 million forecast, on projected revenue of $19.4 billion. One incidental piece of ONE's identity worth noting is that its magenta hulls were a deliberate branding decision, chosen to make a brand-new company visible in ports where nobody had heard of it.
