Sinotrans

Sinotrans Container Lines, which trades as Sinolines, is one of several companies operating under variations of the Sinotrans name, and the corporate genealogy matters more here than it does for most carriers. The container operator was established in Shanghai in 1998, but the Sinotrans brand itself goes back to 1950 and belongs to a much older, much broader Chinese logistics group. Those are separate businesses. The container line's ownership has also moved: China Merchants Energy Shipping, the listed shipping arm of the state-owned China Merchants Group, consolidated full ownership of Sinolines in a transaction reported at around $316 million, a deal that gave China Merchants a position in container liner shipping alongside its existing tanker and bulk operations. The practical consequence is that Sinolines today answers to a state energy-and-bulk shipping parent rather than to the Sinotrans logistics group whose name it carries.

Sinolines is a regional carrier, not a deep-sea operator, and its network reflects that. It runs Chinese domestic coastal and river container services alongside intra-Asia routes reaching Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, with Australian coverage layered on top. Its fleet is small by global standards, in the region of twenty vessels, which places it well outside the tier of carriers that deploy their own tonnage on Asia-Europe or Transpacific mainline strings. Where Sinolines reaches beyond its natural intra-Asia footprint, it generally does so as a slot participant on another line's service rather than by sailing its own ship, contributing a single vessel to a partner's rotation rather than committing the capital a full independent string would require.

The company's more consequential recent move has been on fleet capacity. Sinolines contracted for twelve new container vessels totalling roughly 52,000 TEU, split across three shipyards inside the China Merchants industrial group: four ships of 8,200 TEU at China Merchants Heavy Industry in Jiangsu, four of 3,000 TEU at China Merchants Jinling Shipbuilding in Nanjing, and four of 1,800 TEU at the Wuhan Qingshan yard. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027. The order tells you something about the direction of the business. Building four 8,200-TEU ships is not an intra-Asia feeder decision — vessels that size are sized for longer-haul deployment, which suggests Sinolines intends to sail its own tonnage on routes where it currently buys slots. It also tells you something about the parent: every one of those twelve ships is being built by a China Merchants yard, meaning the group is financing its own expansion into container shipping through its own shipbuilding capacity, keeping both the order book and the construction inside the same state conglomerate. Alongside the newbuild programme, Sinolines has continued adding regional services, including a China-Haiphong string launched in 2025 connecting Qingdao and Ningbo to northern Vietnam.
