About Yang Ming

Yang Ming Marine Transport was created in December 1972 as a Taiwanese state enterprise, taking its name from a shipping business whose lineage traces back to mainland China earlier in the century. It is often described as a private carrier that used to be state-owned, but the more accurate description is that it sits somewhere in between. Privatisation was formally completed in February 1996, when the government's holding fell below the fifty-percent threshold, and successive share sales since then, including a substantial reduction during the exceptionally profitable 2021 freight market, have taken public-sector ownership down to roughly fourteen percent. That residual stake is split across the Ministry of Transportation and Communications and the National Development Fund, which between them remain the two largest individual shareholders even though retail investors collectively hold the majority. The practical consequence is that Yang Ming behaves as a listed commercial carrier answerable to the Taiwan Stock Exchange, while the state retains enough of a position to be consulted on strategic questions.

The fleet is mid-sized by global standards and deliberately so. As of early 2026 Yang Ming was operating around 716,000 TEU of capacity across roughly 97 ships, split between 59 owned vessels accounting for about 334,000 TEU and 38 chartered vessels accounting for about 382,000 TEU. That split is worth noticing: more than half of Yang Ming's carrying capacity sits on chartered tonnage, and the chartered ships are on average considerably larger than the owned ones. Yang Ming is also the only member of its alliance that has never operated a vessel above 20,000 TEU, having concentrated instead on the 8,000 to 16,000 TEU bands. Its orderbook in early 2026 stood at 18 ships totalling around 237,000 TEU, being built at Imabari in Japan and at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean in South Korea, with five 15,500 TEU vessels scheduled for 2026 delivery. In March 2026 the board approved a further six 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel ships, framed explicitly as replacement tonnage for ageing and charter-expiring vessels in the 4,250 to 6,500 TEU range rather than as pure growth capacity.

On alliances, Yang Ming sits in the Premier Alliance alongside Ocean Network Express and HMM, the grouping that formed after the older THE Alliance structure broke up when Hapag-Lloyd departed to join Maersk in Gemini. The Premier Alliance's 2026 network, effective from April, reduced the number of Chinese hub ports in favour of concentrating volume at Shanghai and Busan, added direct calls elsewhere, and introduced new Asia-Europe and Transpacific strings. Yang Ming's own network centres on the Transpacific and Asia-Europe trades, with Asia-Mediterranean, Latin American and intra-Asia services underneath. Its stated medium-term plan is a 124-vessel fleet of 1.25 million TEU by 2032, which would represent roughly seventy percent growth on current capacity and target a global market share between three and 3.5 percent. Chairman Chuck Tsai has said the company intends to acquire more containers and terminals alongside ships, and Yang Ming has favoured Japanese and Korean yards over Chinese ones, a preference generally read as reflecting cross-strait political risk rather than commercial pricing. Pakistani importers and exporters booking on Yang Ming can track and clear those shipments through Maalbardaar.
