Samudera Shipping Line

Samudera Shipping Line Ltd was incorporated in Singapore in 1993 as the container shipping arm of PT Samudera Indonesia Tbk, the Jakarta-listed logistics group. The two entities are frequently conflated, and the distinction matters when researching the company: the shipping line is Singaporean and listed on the Singapore Exchange, while its parent is Indonesian and listed in Jakarta. Neither description is wrong; they refer to different companies in the same group. The listing has a consequence that sets Samudera apart from most regional operators of comparable size — it files audited annual reports, so its figures are company-reported rather than estimated from vessel-tracking data.

Those reports describe a business considerably larger in throughput than its vessel count suggests. Samudera handled 2,062,000 TEU in 2025, up 7.9 percent from 1,911,000 TEU the year before, on container segment revenue of $556.2 million, part of total group revenue of $605.7 million. Profit attributable to owners rose 8.3 percent to $76.7 million. The gap between a modest owned fleet and a two-million-TEU annual throughput is explained by the business model rather than by hidden tonnage: Samudera's core work is feedering, moving containers between Singapore as a hub port and outgoing spoke ports across Asia, on behalf of mainline operators, NVOCCs and other container operators as well as end shippers. A feeder operator handles the same box repeatedly across many short legs, and slot sales to other carriers add volume without adding ships.

The company's approach to fleet growth is deliberately conservative, and it says so plainly: it acquires or charters vessels when there is committed demand rather than expanding speculatively. In practice that produces a mixed and shifting fleet composition. During 2025 it added a container vessel in September, took delivery of two 1,900 TEU vessels on long-term time charter, agreed a $50.36 million purchase of a second-hand 2,684 TEU ship for Q4 2025 delivery, and recognised right-of-use assets on eight container vessels through new charters and lease extensions. Samudera is not an alliance member and does not operate as one; its commercial relationships are with the mainline carriers whose cargo it feeds rather than with peer lines sharing a network. Two recent moves indicate where the company is heading. In Japan, Samudera formed a joint venture with Imoto Corporation called Blue Ocean Shipping, which began with the acquisition of two container ships from the Imoto Lines group and has since contracted for a new 696 TEU newbuilding, targeting Japan's coastal and regional trades — a domestic market Samudera had no presence in previously. Separately, it established Samudera Tankers Pte Ltd to re-enter the regional tanker business, and its non-container segments grew faster than container shipping in percentage terms during 2025. The pattern is a feeder operator diversifying by geography and by cargo type rather than by chasing scale in its existing lanes.
