Status as of late September 2026. The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since 28 February 2026. Maersk's operational update of 23 September says UAE bookings are heavily restricted, with Khor Fakkan taking imports only and cargo discharged at Fujairah and moved by bonded truck; Salalah, Sohar and Jeddah are accepting most cargo; Dammam and Iraq bookings are largely suspended. Rerouting inside the UAE costs roughly 4 to 5 times a Hormuz transit.

What moves the price on Pakistan → Middle East
- trending_upEmergency surcharges: Maersk's Hormuz Emergency Freight is US$1,000 per container on vessels that transit, on top of Emergency Freight Rate charges of US$1,800 to US$3,800 depending on cargo.
- trending_upOverland legs: relaying cargo from Fujairah or Khor Fakkan to Jebel Ali by bonded truck adds cost and queue time of about 12 hours at the gate.
- trending_upPerishables: mango season runs from mid-May in Sindh to late September in Punjab, and kinnow from December to April (TDAP). Mango sea freight was reported at multiples of last season's US$1,000 to US$1,400 per container in 2026, so book reefers early.
- trending_upDemurrage relief: Pakistani terminal operators waived demurrage on export containers that arrived before 3 March 2026; check which of your boxes qualify.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still ship from Karachi to Jebel Ali?
expand_more
Mostly by a two-step route. Since the Strait of Hormuz closed on 28 February 2026, boxes booked for the UAE are discharged at Fujairah or Khor Fakkan and moved to Jebel Ali by bonded truck. Maersk's 23 September 2026 update describes UAE bookings as heavily restricted, so check availability before committing to a delivery date.
Is there a direct Pakistan to UAE feeder service?
expand_more
Yes. KGTL began a feeder from Karachi to Fujairah and Khor Fakkan, with the first vessel arriving on 11 March 2026, and PNSC runs a Gulf feeder link between Karachi and the same two ports. Pakistan's Ministry of Commerce also reports PNSC ordering up to five feeder container ships.
Which Gulf ports are accepting cargo right now?
expand_more
As of Maersk's 23 September 2026 update, Salalah, Sohar and Jeddah accept most cargo (Jeddah for dry cargo), while UAE and Saudi Gulf-coast bookings are restricted and Iraq bookings are nearly all suspended. Conditions change quickly, so we confirm the port at booking.
Why are freight costs higher than last year?
expand_more
Carriers added war-risk and emergency surcharges after the Strait of Hormuz closed, including Maersk's Hormuz Emergency Freight of US$1,000 per container, and rerouting inside the UAE costs roughly 4 to 5 times a Hormuz transit. Pakistan's shipping agents assured the government that no war surcharges apply to cargo already in transit.
What does Pakistan export to the Gulf?
expand_more
Rice, halal meat, apparel and made-up textiles, fruit and vegetables, and oilseeds. In 2025 the UAE's largest Pakistani import lines were mineral fuels, woven apparel, rice and meat; Saudi Arabia's were meat, rice and apparel.
Is there a Pakistan-GCC free trade agreement?
expand_more
Not in force. A preliminary agreement covering goods, services, digital trade, intellectual property and investment was signed in Riyadh on 28 September 2023, and Pakistan's foreign ministry still described the final agreement as at an advanced stage in November 2025. Don't assume Gulf preferential duty on your goods.
What certificates do I need to send meat to Saudi Arabia?
expand_more
Saudi Arabia's food authority (SFDA) makes a halal slaughter certificate mandatory for meat, poultry and their products, alongside an SFDA-registered importer and food item and, where applicable, a certificate of origin. Product registration and shipment certificates for regulated goods run through the SABER platform.
How do I file an export declaration and get paid?
expand_more
Exports are declared through the Single Declaration on Pakistan Single Window, which replaced the old paper and electronic Form E workflow; the State Bank's export undertaking is now given through PSW. Export proceeds generally have to reach your bank by the due date or within 120 days of shipment, whichever is earlier, with a 180-day exception for certain discounted receivables.
How big is the Pakistan to Gulf market?
expand_more
Pakistan exported US$3.09bn to the Middle East in FY2025-26. The UAE alone took US$1.63bn in the first nine months, and Saudi Arabia US$683m for the full year. Pakistan's Middle East exports fell about 2% on the year despite the disruption, with the sharpest fall in March 2026.
